In the English system (Bradford), the fiber is oiled before combing, and a .

It is traditional to worsted spin the lustre fibres such as Cotswold and Wensleydale and the resulting yarns are nice and soft and strong, but the fibre makes for a very lean yarn and if the wool is combed but then woollen spun you get the benefit of both the softer result from combing and the bulk from woollen spinning. Blankets, scarves, coating, are from woolen yarns. Worsted-style spinning, unlike woolen-style, does not allow twist to enter the fiber during drafting. As such, for our worsted-spun yarns, once the roving is loaded on the spinning frame, they first pass through a draft zone, which drafts the fiber to open it up and reduce it to the intended weight (and thickness) required for the yarn.

In this photo below you can see the 1ply Supreme (worsted) on the left has more of a halo whereas the 1ply Cobweb (woollen) on the right has better stitch definition – it almost feels like cotton although it is % wool.

Woolen and Worsted. It is common knowledge that wool is spun into two distinct types of yarns, worsted and woolen. The difference in these two yarns are mainly due to two factors; (1) the nature or class of wool used; and (2) the method of preparing and spinning the fibres into yarn.

Worsted Spinning. During worsted spinning the roving is first drafted, in the drafting zone on the spinning machine, before entering the twisting zone where a predetermined amount of twist is inserted to produce a singles (1xply) yarn. The long wool from worsted-type sheep is arranged, either by gilling (pulling through holes) combing with metal combs, or as part of the spinning process, so that the fibres lie parallel and end to end: these long, parallel wool fibres are what characterise worsted wool processing.

The real confusion for worsted vs. woolen spinning comes when we start talking about semi-worsted and semi-woolen yarns. In most cases, semi-worsted and semi-woolen yarns could often be confused for the same thing. Most people define semi-worsted as spinning worsted using carded fibers while spinning the way you would for worsted yarn.

Some yarns are not so obvious. Jill Draper’s Windham (Merino wool, worsted spun) and Empire (Rambouillet wool, woolen spun) are perfect examples of that. Two yarns from Jill Draper Makes Stuff. In both photos, Windham (Color: cloud) is on the left, and Empire (color: clear skies) is on the right.
